Ascended armor is nice, but for the cost in gold, at least as far as light armor goes, run the math before you make a decision. My pants stand to cost my light-armor about 75-85g alone for a boost that is not much compared to either of my weapons. As of this writing, a Bolt of Damask is going for 12.5g on buy order.
Viper's is the condi-dps gold standard to work toward but you can also make due with other types and get reasonably close. Reaper benefits a lot from the power damage on Viper's but, if you intend to auto-attack with scepter, Sinister, Carrion or other 3-stat armor with higher condition damage is possible if you can get close to 100% duration increase using a combination of runes, consumables
Then, do guild missions (many guilds offer public missions if your guild hasn't unlocked them yet) to earn commendations that you can use to get ascended accessories. You can get rings randomly from FotM 10+ bonus chests or you can buy the specific ones you need using pristine fractal relics, which you also get from those bonus chests.

Each expansion brought new stat combos, and those aren’t able to be chosen on the gear from the Wizard’s Vault.
